Being an Actuary
Actuaries have plied their trade in life assurance companies since the early 19th century. Even then they dealt with the core present-day activities such as assessing risk, calculating premium rates and reserving.

Life Assurance Work
Actuaries typically operate in all areas of a life company’s business and might be involved in product development, product pricing, endowments and underwriting. They may also possibly have to produce statutory annual returns for the Financial Services Authority.

One particular actuarial role that every life office must maintain is an Appointed Actuary. The Appointed Actuary has statutory responsibility for certifying that the company has sufficient reserves to meet all future claims and also to ensure that policyholders’ funds are secure.

A Career in Life Assurance
Most life companies are large and well established, employing many thousands of people. This provides exciting opportunities for progression to senior management or senior actuarial roles, embracing a wide variety of specialist actuarial skills. Many large life companies have foreign parents and can also offer opportunities for travel and/or work abroad.

Life offices are generally regarded as among the best environments for those who are studying for actuarial exams. Students can often find more opportunity to study and there is often tutorial and mentoring support, usually provided by recently qualified actuaries. Life companies are also more likely to show greater flexibility over study leave.
